Confusing English Words | Difference Between

We all know that English is a confusing and crazy language.

Commonly Used Confusing Words:-

1. Go vs Visit:- जाना.
These words have the same meaning but the sense to use it is different, let's see how.

Go:- The word "Go" is used when you mean to say that somewhere you go frequently (बार-बार जाना). It indicates a simple movement.

For Example- I go to school.

Visit:- The word "Visit" is used when you mean to say that you are to go to see a person or place for a period of time (घुमने जाना).

For Example:- I am going to visit the Taj Mahal.

2. Carry vs Take:- ले जाना.
These words also have the same meaning but used in other senses.

Carry:- It means to hold someone/something on your hands, arms or on back while moving from one place to another (अपनी एनर्जी पर ले जाना).

For Example:- I will carry my phone with me.

Take:- It is used when someone/something is going with you but in its own energy or by your possession you get things done (दुसरो कि एनर्जीपर ले जाना).

For Example:- I will take you with me.

3. Cook vs Make:- पकाना/बनाना.
Both of them means to make something.

Cook:- This word means to prepare food for eating by heating it (गला कर पकाना).

For Example:- I am cooking vegetables.

Make:- This word means to prepare a breakfast or something which do not need to be heated (कढ़ाई या भगोने मे बनाना/पकाना.

For Example:- I will make noodles.

4. Roof vs Ceiling:- छत.
This is also the most confusing word in English.

Roof:- This word means the upper side of the building (छत के उपर वाला भाग).

For Example:- Don't run on the roof.

Ceiling:- This word means the upper side inside the building in which fan is installed (छत का नीचे वाला भाग).

For Example:- I have purchased the new ceiling fan.

5. Keep vs Put vs Place:- रखना.
These pairs of words are also the most confusing and commonly spoken.

Keep:- It is used when you put something down by your hands (हाथ से नीचे रखना).

For Example:- Keep this file on the table.

Put:- It is used when you put something from one place to another (एक जगह से दूसरी जगह रखना).

For Example:- Put the file on the table.

Place:- It is used when you put something which is big in size (भारी भरकम समान रखना).

For Example:- Place the wardrobe in the corner.

6. Swim vs Float:- तैरना. 

Swim:- It is an action that you have to move your legs, arms to able to move in the water. Used for people or all the animal lives in the land (इंसान व ज़मीन पर रहने वाले जानवर के लिए उपयोग होता है).

For Example:- I am swimming.

Float:- It is used for all types of sea creatures (सभी समुद्री जीव).

For Example:- Fishes are floating.

7. Bridge vs Flyover:- पुल. 

This is also the most confusing word in English which you must know.

Bridge:- It is used for the bridge made over a river (पीनी के ऊपर).

For Example:- The bridge is too long.

Flyover:-  It is used for the bridge made over a road (सड़क के ऊपर).

For Example:- The flyover is too long.

8. Speak vs Say vs Tell:- बोलना. 
These are also the most confusing and commonly spoken words in English.

Speak:- It is used to exchange information about something (formal) (बोलना, औपचारिक).

For Example:- I am speaking to you.
(Can be used to cover languages)

Say:- It is used to speak about something, usually reporting on something that has been said (कहना, दिल की बात).

For Example:- I want to say something.
(Not need an object)

Tell:- "Tell" means to give information to a person. "Tell" and "Told" are always followed by a person. It is used when we say something to someone (बताना, सवाल का जबाब देना).

For Example:- I want to tell you something.
(Needs an object)

9. Leave vs Holiday vs Vacation:- छुट्टी. 
These are also the most confusing words in English, you must know the correct use.

Leave:-  It is used when you take leave by yourself (खुद ली गई छुट्टी).

For Example:- I have taken a one day leave.

Holiday:- It is used on the festival, religious event, national celebration officially (सरकारी छुट्टी).

For Example:- We got 6 days holiday at Christmas.

Vacation:- It is used for long days leave or holiday (लम्बे समय की छुट्टीयाँ).

For Example:- I am going to Goa in summer vacation.

10. Affect vs Effect:- प्रभाव. 
Both of them are Verb and Noun commonly confused by learners.

Affect (Verb):- It means to have an effect on someone or something or to make a change in someone or something. (किसी पर या किसी चीज पर असर पड़ना या बदलाव करना).

For Example:- New technologies affect, how we live.

Effect (noun):- It means a change that is a result or consequence of an action or other cause. (कोई बदलाव जो किसी क्रिया या अन्य कारण का प्रभाव हैं).

For Example:- Pollution in the cities effects me badly.
