What is parts of speech? | Basics For Spoken English.

Parts of Speech in English Grammar:

The Parts of speech explains how a word used in a sentence. 


There are eight types of parts of speech:-

1. Noun. 
2. Pronoun. 
3. Adjective.
4. Verb.
5. Adverb. 
6. Preposition.
7. Conjunction.
8. Interjection. 

Parts of speech

1. Noun (संज्ञा):- Naming word.
The word used as the name to indicate a person, place or thing is called a noun.

(किसी व्यक्ति, स्थान या चीज़ को इंगित करने के लिए नाम के रूप में प्रयुक्त शब्द को संज्ञा कहा जाता है।)


Example:-

  • This is a pen.
  • Girls are so talkative.
  • I am going to school.
  • Boys are going to ground.



2. Pronoun (सर्वनाम):- Replaces a noun. 

A pronoun is a word that is used instead of a noun. Generally to avoid repetition of the noun.

(सर्वनाम वह शब्द है जिसका उपयोग संज्ञा के बजाय किया जाता है।)

Example:-

  • It is your responsibility.
  • He is a stranger.
  • They are stupid.
  • This is a hilarious movie.

3. Adjective (विशेषण):- Describing word. 

An adjective is a word that describes the characteristics of a noun and pronoun.


(विशेषण वह शब्द है जो संज्ञा और सर्वनाम की विशेषताओं का वर्णन करता है।)


Example:-
  • She is so pretty.
  • Amit is a good boy.
  • This is a good idea.
  • She has a sweet voice.

4. Verb (क्रिया):- Action Word.

A verb is a word or group of words that express an action or a state.


(क्रिया एक शब्द या शब्दों का समूह है जो किसी क्रिया या अवस्था को व्यक्त करता है।)


Example:-

  • She is playing.
  • I am working now.
  • You are doing a great job.
  • They are traveling to India.

5. Adverb (क्रिया विशेषण):-
 Describes a 
verb, adjective or adverb. 
An adverb is a word that describes or gives more information about a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even the entire sentence.

(क्रिया विशेषण वह शब्द है जो किसी क्रिया, विशेषण और दूसरे क्रिया विशेषण या संपूर्ण वाक्य के बारे में अधिक जानकारी देता है या बताता है।)


Example:-
  • This job is temporary.
  • She goes very rarely.
  • She is so beautiful.
  • He runs very fast.

6. Preposition (पूर्वसर्ग):- Shows relationship. 
A preposition is a word that is used before a noun or a pronoun to connect it to another word in the sentence. It is usually used to show location, direction, time, and so forth.

(यह वो शब्द होते हैं जो किसी संज्ञा या सर्वनाम और वाक्य के दूसरे भाग के बीच के संबंध को दर्शाते हैं उसे संबंध सूचक अव्यय कहते हैं।)

Example:-

  • Put it on the table.
  • I have a book in my hand.
  • The cat is under the table.
  • I am under the weather.

7. Conjunction (संयोजक):- Joining word. 
A conjunction is a word that is used to join two words or sentences.

(एक संयोजक वह शब्द है जिसका उपयोग शब्दों या वाक्यों को जोड़ने के लिए किया जाता है।)


Example:-

  • We are brothers and sisters.
  • I am going for winter vacation.
  • He came here but went away.
  • Boys and girls are playing.

8. Interjection (विस्मयादिबोधक):- Expressing word. 

An interjection is a short sound, word or phrase used to express the speaker's emotion. Such words or phrases are followed by an exclamation mark ( ! ). Ex- Wow!, Help!, Oh! etc.


(इसका प्रयोग अपनी भावनाओं को व्यक्त करने हेतु किया जाता है। अचानक हुई किसी घटना से मन की भावनाओं का व्यक्त होना जैसे खुशी या दुख को प्रकट करना आदि भावनाओं को व्यक्त करने के लिए प्रयोग किये गये ऐसे शब्द के अन्त में एक्सक्लेमेशन मार्क ( ! ) को लगाया जाता है।)


Example:-

  • Oh! That's great.
  • Oh, dear! What happened? 
  • Hello! How are you doing? 
  • Well, that's an option too.
